In this update, we're looking at employment matters- specifically issues with the employment contract - when is a contractor an employee?

2021 marks a significant milestone in the growth of
Fieldings Porter as one of the top legal firms in the UK. This year we celebrate 150 years of providing solid legal support to communities in the North West and nationwide.
WHAT MATTHEW HAS BEEN UP TO! • Fieldings Porter's David Darlington, Emma Manifold and Liz volunteered at Bolton Community Kitchen. Bolton Community Kitchen are a non-profit group of volunteers. They hand out food and clothes to the homeless, vulnerable and elderly people of Bolton.
• Our Senior Partner Fraser Young cycled to work for national cycle to work day and Matthew decided to go along for the ride. Fieldings Porter made a donation to North West Air Ambulance Charity, the charity chosen by Fraser.
• Fieldings Porter's Emma Manifold and Liz visited Wood Street Mission to donate school uniforms for their Smart Start School Appeal! We also delivered over 100 children’s books for their Books Forever Project and had the pleasure of meeting their fundraiser, Steph Bryant and their mascot.
• Matthew and Fieldings Porter's Marie visited Fortalice with donations made by our partners of back-to-school supplies for children and young people supported by the service. The service's Grace Wood was pleased to meet Matthew.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
The clients. People only come to us because they are in a situation they cannot sort out themselves and I enjoy getting them to know us and becoming friends of the firm. You always do your best for your friends and they stay loyal in return.
What’s the highlight of your career to date? I represented a woman who had been sacked for stealing with no evidence at all. The case was not worth much as she got another (better paid) job very quickly but she wanted to go to a tribunal to show her friends and colleagues that she was not a thief. She felt that she needed her day in a public forum to do that and had been very badly affected by the smear on her reputation. The judge was scathing about the employer’s cruel behaviour and about the damage that their actions had caused. We won a modest amount, which the client promptly gave to a charity of my choice. The principle was the thing for her. I slept well that night.
If you weren’t a solicitor what would you be doing
If I could get paid professionally for walking hills, then that would be ideal.
When you’re not working, we’d be most likely to find you?
In the garden or down at Bolton Rugby Club where I am one of the coaches for the Colts team.
What is your favourite book?
Bill Bryson- A Short History of Nearly Everything- accessible and fascinating science.
Recommend a place to visit in Manchester/Bolton
In Manchester, the time of day is important. A walk through the city on a winter morning as it slowly wakes up and cranks into life, warm light spilling from shop windows on to wet pavements is wonderful. In Bolton, all roads north meet the glorious West Pennine Hills.
