Update 13
Charities and the law

Charity Matters

Hello

Whilst many people decide to set up charities, not as many are aware of their obligations and the legal processes that have to be followed to run a charity correctly.

This month, we're focusing on charities and aspects of Charity Law that impact the day-to-day operation of a charity. Our charity law expert, David Porter, recently appeared at the Northern Fundraising Conference and has written a series of articles concerning charity matters here.

In this Update we're covering:

•  the impact of GDPR on charities that process personal information

•  what you need to have in place to avoid conflicts of interest

•  Charity Commission guidance for charity Trustees
Whatever legal issues you encounter, you need only pick up the phone and speak to a member of our team. Recognised as an approachable and very knowledgable bunch, we’re always happy to chat.

How long have you worked for Fieldings Porter?
23 years. My Father, Philip Porter, started his practice in 1937 and I joined him in 1966. I merged Porter Hope and Knipe with Fieldings to form Fieldings Porter in 1995.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Meeting the people and advising charitable organisations of all sizes and disciplines. Charitable trustees are all volunteers and give of their time for free to their individual charites. They are some of the nicest people to act for.

What’s the highlight of your career to date?
Being appointed a judge in the Tax Tribunal and author of 7 books on financial management for businesses.

If you weren’t a solicitor what would you be doing?
I would have been a builder having converted seven houses, installed kitchens, bathrooms, staircases and constructed dry stone walls myself.

When you’re not working we’d be most likely to find you?
Gardening, walking, playing bridge, golf and the guitar

What is your favourite book?
Seamus Heaney’s poems
